No, I don't think Morgue is trying to "organise" the way people talk to newcomers (you especially already do a fantastic job of that). He's talking about the way we use public time: the time when the organisers stop people from socialising or from gaming because they need to do admin stuff. He's arguing that we should use this time efficiently and professionally, so as to let people quickly get back to the socialising and gaming which is what they came for, and that a particular danger of doing too much "social" stuff (like lengthy banter) on public time is that it becomes exclusionary (because it is actually private to the "in crowd" and not accessible to newcomers/outsiders). That is, his concern is that while individuals like you work hard to make people feel welcome, bad use of public time undoes your excellent work by making them feel excluded and therefore unwelcome.
(Morgue: hope I'm not putting words into your mouth.) |

That's how I understood it too, and I totally agree.
I'm guilty of this in-jokey shout out stuff too and thinking back to my first Kapcon experience I do remember being pretty confused by stuff that was being shouted out. It didn't put me off, personally, it just made me dertermined to get into the 'in crowd' but then I'm a freak
I will not do jokey shout outs or heckles this year.

Didn't bother me all the much either, but then I suppose I was only a kid when I first started attending ;p

That's the extreme end of it yes, but I would never go so far as to say that it 'undoes' the work of the individual to make another individual feel welcome. That can not be 'undone'. _________________ 'Whatever happens, happens...' |

For "undoes," read "vitiates." |

| Would have loved to meet you guys tonight, alas work had me serving people, rather than being served. Finish work around 5ish tomorrow up at kapiti coast, so hopefully will be at the school around 6:30ish, prolly just milling about watching people playing their games. |

| I have to say: I miss the March of the Ducklings. I don't think it took very long, and I think it worked well in getting each group psyched and ready to jump into the game. (Trimmed admin announcements are otherwise a worthy thing.) |

I, in contrast, loved just being able to go directly to my room and let the players worry about finding the game and getting there. That few extra moments of stillness at the start really helped focus my mind and leap in straight off. _________________ The opinions prevalent in one age... are confuted and rejected in another and rise again to reception in remoter times. I hate to say it ( ) but I agree with Mash. Not having to wrangle any players was great and allowed me to get to the room and be ready for them when they all arrived. _________________ Planning: Al Shir-Ma (KapCon LARP)

me too, I miss the duckling walk as a tradition, but we are too big for it now.
there were a few problems with extra players in a game due to name mixups but this is normal and the benefits were that there was less people hassling the desk staff at the start of the round. _________________ Planning - unamed spy game , Super reception

As a player and a first time Kapcon attendee, I liked not having to duckling walk.
On the other hand, because there weren't timetable copies on every floor, I found myself getting to the 4th floor, forgetting what game I was supposed to be in, and heading backup to the 4th floor to find out where I was supposed to be again.
I do this because I'm forgetful, I think every game I joined was met with a "Hey, is this the game I think it is?" when I entered the room.
As for meeting people, I did manage to feel a bit like an outsider, not due to the admin (they were mostly the people who had learnt my name) but because as a Chch gamer, I kind of ghettoized myself into talking to the other CHCH or former CHCH people at the con.
Which is my own fault, but I just didn't know a lot of people, and except for people I'd played with, I didn't get the general vibe of "I want to talk to strangers" from the 4th floor lounge area between games.
I think this is more a personal failing than a general failing of the con, but I'm not really sure how to solve it either way. Right? I fully understand that meal-break time is time people want to catch up with friends, and it's not like I didn't have people to talk to.
Wow, that got really rambly. |

Another vote here for not missing the duckling walk thing. It was always a struggle to be heard when calling out names and I kinda hated it. The way things worked this year it was much more relaxed and awesome _________________ read more of my daring adventures at http://jennitalula.wordpress.com/ |

| Yeah I hated the whole reading names etc....not needed. Not having it reduced the stress, improved my prep time and with the pre-selection of games for GMs I didnt need to get my act together to do game selections while also trying to prep games so my stress levels were a lot lower than in previous years. |
