Having run such a game one year, there are constant interruptiosn from traffic. But I think the corridor alcoves are quite useable, and generally safe from interruptions. _________________ Playing: ArM5 - Fons Albae; Pendragon: Defenders of Sarum; The Nightmare Room

At risk of seeming banal: a place to sit would help.
The only official hang-out space being a crowd is a bit intimidating if you're not part of the in-crowd. But even if you're not very social, going off to sit on your own in an empty classroom is a bit sad. Having a bigger socializing space by expanding into another "main" room would permit people to hang out in a way that's neither part of the crowded group nor sadly lonely. |
The problem with that is getting announcements to people, as well as the question of where to put them.
Maybe just getting more seating on Level 1 would be a good idea. I know that's half the reason I don't end up chatting in big groups - because the only place to sit is the ground. |
You can hear that the announcements are on from the side-rooms and walk back into the main room if you are hard of hearing. Sound carries pretty well so long as the doors are open. |

Conan asked what could be done to help people who didn't want to socialise have a better con.
There were occasions when people ran short (10 -15 minute) mini-games between rounds. More gaming might = better con for them, if there were GMs willing to run such games (in a non-scheduled way) |

| Matt, I'm intrigued. Can you remember any examples of the kinds of things people did as mini-games? |

I think I recall this one, or something like it, it was fun _________________ 'Whatever happens, happens...' |

Actually, the corridor alcove under the overhang of the bouldering wall is quite nifty. I'm trying to figure out what to do with it. |

From memory I think Dale ran a 15 minute mini game between rounds way back at Kapcon 7/8ish? (at Turnbull House), all standing up, pretty much one intense scene. Without wanting to give spoilers you are characters with no memories, so you can jump straight into roleplaying without any setup time.
Morgue has run a game called Aliens: Velocity set on a train which has an average running time under 20 minutes (because the PCs die that fast).
And as Idiot said he ran Bell the Cat.
None of these things would help shy or non-socialising people if they didn't jump in, but for those who want something to do in the gaps between rounds then mini-games and board games with a short running time would be cool things for people (GMs/facilitators) to organise |

I believe it was designed to run in 1 hour, though often finished in 45 mins. _________________ Playing: Red Sun SEED (Exalted2e); Paths of the Damned (WFRP2e)

Aha - it was at Kapcon 9. My writeup was very brief:
Dale’s game was a 15 minute long intense Cthulhu session, in which we all played amnesiac psychopaths on the run. Very cool, and excellent that it could be run between sessions. |

Ah, Impulse I remember thee not as well as I thought...
I don't know if we need to be too worried about creating a mixer at the 'con. Our gaming is inherently social, and there are plenty of opportunities to make new friends if that's what you want, just by attending games. There'll always be an element of insider-ness but really its no different to any other hobby in that regard. _________________ Playing: Call of Cthulhu, D&D 4th ed.

I think this would solve the problem that has been raised. For those people who are not typically social outside of a game, they will have the opportunity to be social by playing in a game during the downtime.
Isn't that what people were complaining about? Kapcon not being inclusive enough or properly focusing on the games offered? _________________ 'Whatever happens, happens...' |

Is it actually a problem? I'd like to hear from first time attendees and people who consider themselves shy - did you feel excluded? included? didn't care?
The thing is, I usually introduce myself to two or three people I've never met before, and I'm an official introvert. I fail to believe that the more outgoing members of Kapcon are not likewise talking to strangers. |

I dont recall seeing anyone sitting by themselves or being alone during the breaks.
Nick and I asked Doug (the full time person from WGS) about his opinions as this was the first time he had played in Kapcon.
He had a great time and one really good suggestion. Basically he pointed out that at Wargaming conventions he always looks forward to the sale table where people bring their old stuff to sell/trade ect. and asked if something like that would be possible. As there are often people around wanting to sell their old books/games I think it could be a nice workable idea providing another kind of social meeting point. Particularly if its in one of the side rooms or on another floor.
Anyway I thought I would put it out there. |
