I have been looking for that as a suggestion. I have heard good things about it too for this kind of thing. _________________ Playing: Red Sun SEED (Exalted2e); Paths of the Damned (WFRP2e)

Cripes, is that what "urban fantasy" has come to mean? Mieville must be wishing he was dead so he could spin in his grave.

Yes, I was just thinking whether there could be a better term to describe it.
EDIT: How about Kermode's term "Gothic Romance"? _________________ The opinions prevalent in one age... are confuted and rejected in another and rise again to reception in remoter times. Thus the human mind is kept in motion without progress.

This Tor.com article is eye-opening, tracking the usage of the term through publishers and bookstores. It's very recent.
"For example, when
the first book came out in 2005, no one was calling this kind of thing urban
fantasy. That all changed within a couple of years." _________________ Gametime - talking about RPG stuff |

Actually, somehow she went from demanding to have all f the Twilight books for her 12th birthday, to hating Twilight.
I was thinking more Harry Potter, or other things which have cities with magic, like Dresden files. Occasionally I get bored and have none of my own reading material handy, and this seems to be the kind of thing she carries around.
She also likes Runaways. But I have no idea how to run a Supers setting. |

Ah, cool. Ignore that whole discussion then!
And regarding Supers - yeah, to be honest, I'd steer clear as a gateway drug. Supers games are tricky. I don't think anything would go wrong, exactly, but I think the other things you've mentioned have a higher chance of going awesome right off the bat. _________________ Gametime - talking about RPG stuff |

Dresden's a good choice then.
As an alternative more along the lines of Harry Potter, Witch Girls Adventures is pretty cool and around the right age range (http://www.witchgirlsadventures.com/) _________________ Playing: Red Sun SEED (Exalted2e); Paths of the Damned (WFRP2e)

I was playing D&D and Vampire at the age of 14. I'd say any game works at this age, really. _________________ Running:WFRP: Paths of the Damned, D&D4e: Reach of the Dark Gods.

I used to know a girl who was playing D&D and Paranoia when she was about 10. Her Dad and older brother were really into roleplaying and we'd help fill out the gaming party. So I'm with James - any game suits - just find one that she wants to play.

I agree. Debbie and Donna are other examples. I just like to hassle James
The most important thing, as you identify, is to find a game she wants to play. _________________ Playing: Red Sun SEED (Exalted2e); Paths of the Damned (WFRP2e)

I'm aware of that, I think it probably won't wind up happening anyway, I don't see her finding other people who want to play a roleplaying game in thsi town, and she was only passingly interested (I think).
Still, I got my answers for RPGs that have more of the themes of what I was looking for, without getting into stuff I don't feel like I work very well with (D&D for example, I have fun playing, but my couple of forays into running it both fell over) |
