Nifty Kickstarter/IndieGoGo/whatever campaigns

Postby Mike Sands » Mon Jun 04, 2012 1:38 am

Traveller 5th edition: http://kck.st/L297GO Expensive, especially with their international shipping costs, but looks very nice. I would like to have an idea how the new rules hold up, too. Anyone around here able to comment on the 5th ed beta files?

Cthuloid tiki mugs? Yes, that seems reasonable http://kck.st/KOuVal

Comments on the playtest files (that some people paid US$45 for) are certainly mixed. Mongoose Traveller seems to get a bette reception from what I have seen.

At US$140 for T5, I certainly won't be verifying if it's any good :)

This may be of interest from a hardcore Traveller fan:

Here's my take on Traveller 5 so far:

T5 rules and Mongoose Traveller rules look like two different RPGs. T5's rules on resolving tasks goes on for 13 pages. Rolling for "8+" to succeed is gone. Average tasks in T5 involve adding an attribute value to a skill level (say DEX + Small Craft) and rolling under that total using 2d6. If it's a harder task, 3d6 is rolled instead. Roll under the total using 4d6 for even harder tasks.

The task rules are much more complicated than I summerized.

For Traveller Careers there is:
Craftsman
Scholar
Entertainer or Performer
Citizen
Scout
Merchant
Spacer (or Navy)
Soldier (or Army)
Agent
Rogue
Noble
Marines
Functionary

You can use an existing homeworld from the Traveller Universe, or create one of your own (to be added to the TU).

Reducing physical and mental attributes to 0 results in death. Your clone is activated upon news of your death if you have life insurance.

Fights are handled by rolling a 2d6 under Attribute + Skill + Speed + (Size - Range) + Status - Range

Unskilled characters roll 3d6.

Failure if 12 was rolled (whether 2d6 or 3d6 was used).

If Size - Range < 0 then the target cannot be attacked.
Status is a modifier for stealthy, evading, crouched, unaware, surprised, obvious

There are hit location damage charts for humans, hivers, animals, and objects.

I do like bell curves in my die rolls. But a 4d6? The chance of rolling a 14 is 11.26%, while a 4 or a 24 is only 0.07%! And for a 5d6, the chance of rolling a 17 or 18 is 10%, while a 5 or a 30 is only 0.01%!!!

I prefer Mongoose Traveller's Die Modifier idea. Its die curve doesn't mutate for harder tasks. I come from GURPS, where the die curve doesn't change either. Just DMs get +/- and you don't have to add up so many dice. The curve may shift left or right, but not outright change.

The T5 artwork looks very meh. The book might actually be better without it.

That's a little disappointing, as that summary makes it sound pretty blah. It's quite possible that the Traveller I want to play is going to be quite different from the Traveller they're making.

T5 is Marc Miller's Spruce Goose RPG in every sense. It bears little resemblance to Classic Traveller which is buried with a pile of new bolted mechanics.

On saying that, Classic Traveller is still excellent and Mongoose Traveller gets good reviews, even from hardcore fans (despite Mongoose's pricing).

Another option would be Stars Without Numbers which is free. Though not the same mechanics, it flet a lot like Classic Traveller to me.

Dungeon World kickstarter is up today: http://kck.st/Lhgv3E

Luke, if you want to talk more about space opera games, maybe we should start a new thread?

Oh, I wasn't getting at you, I just didn't want the campaigns to get lost in grognard nostalgia :)

Possibly not nifty, but I pledged for the 5th printing of the C&C PHB: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/676 ... h-printing

The physical book pledge currently gets a second copy and a module for free.

C&C is my favourite D&D retroclone. It does D&D5e better than 5e does and can be used to run older modules without almost no conversion. This printing has full colour which will be a treat.

Here's another that looks like it won't creep over the line, thanks to a bit of a fumble with the previous V20 Companion: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/200 ... mpire-20th
